how to create glowing string lights in procreate - episode 10

video - Episode 10

In this video chat episode number ten, I am creating glowing string lights in Procreate using glow effect techniques to make them glow on the fish-shaped string lights.

I completed the string lights before I finished the trailer but kept the lights separate from the trailer design on their own layers so that I could make them glow later.

I was looking forward to creating the fish string lights and was motivated to create this particular artwork detail. But I thought ahead as I knew I would make them glow. Creating this detail first before creating the glow effects and finishing out the trailer helped fuel my creativity in designing this lighted penguin trailer.

Glowing String Lights with Glow Effects in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:02.620

    I am Denise Palmer,

    00:00:02.840 --> 00:00:04.180

    And I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:09.180

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:09.180 --> 00:00:12.660

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical

    00:00:12.660 --> 00:00:13.493

    Plants

    00:00:13.540 --> 00:00:14.540

    Surround my everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.660

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and

    00:00:23.660 --> 00:00:26.540

    Design. In this time-lapse video,

    00:00:27.100 --> 00:00:31.700

    I am creating a lighted penguin trailer in procreate that has

    00:00:31.730 --> 00:00:33.860

    glowing fish shaped string lights.

    00:00:34.900 --> 00:00:39.750

    This trailer was created for a larger design pattern design

    00:00:40.340 --> 00:00:42.830

    that was for a custom illustration project.

    00:00:43.690 --> 00:00:47.670

    And so this is one of the houses, well, it's a trailer,

    00:00:47.810 --> 00:00:51.990

    but it's a house. It's for a penguin that lives there in Antarctica.

    00:00:52.730 --> 00:00:55.270

    And if you wanna see the finished design,

    00:00:55.870 --> 00:01:00.430

    I will be showing a closeup view of the trailer at the end of the video

    00:01:00.890 --> 00:01:02.030

    in the finished design.

    00:01:02.410 --> 00:01:07.190

    But I'm also going to drop a link in the description below the video

    00:01:07.720 --> 00:01:12.470

    where you can see more details about the custom project that this was

    00:01:12.470 --> 00:01:13.303

    created for.

    00:01:14.030 --> 00:01:18.610

    I would've normally completed the trailer first before doing the lights,

    00:01:18.910 --> 00:01:19.810

    any part of the lights,

    00:01:20.270 --> 00:01:24.970

    but I was so excited about the fish lights that I had to draw them at the very

    00:01:24.970 --> 00:01:29.860

    beginning. When you are creating illustrations or working on any project,

    00:01:30.200 --> 00:01:34.700

    if you feel really inspired to create one particular aspect

    00:01:35.080 --> 00:01:35.913

    of your artwork,

    00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:41.740

    do that part first and get the idea out of your head and onto your procreate

    00:01:41.740 --> 00:01:46.180

    canvas. Your inspiration will fuel the rest of your design,

    00:01:46.680 --> 00:01:51.340

    so I find it super helpful to capture that inspiration when it is there

    00:01:51.570 --> 00:01:54.660

    waiting for you to tell that story in your artwork.

    00:01:56.030 --> 00:02:00.320

    Your excitement will show through in your work and in the details and effort

    00:02:00.320 --> 00:02:04.960

    that you put into your illustrations, even though the scene is daytime.

    00:02:05.100 --> 00:02:07.160

    In the larger penguin town design,

    00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:12.520

    I wanted to make the string lights glow on this trailer because penguins love

    00:02:12.590 --> 00:02:13.880

    fish and they,

    00:02:13.940 --> 00:02:18.840

    of course would have glowing fish string lights on their trailer in an in

    00:02:18.970 --> 00:02:19.803

    Antarctica.

    00:02:21.470 --> 00:02:25.920

    This is the finished design that is part of the larger penguin town design

    00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:30.540

    for this custom illustration project. For this pattern design,

    00:02:31.260 --> 00:02:36.220

    I incorporated two different glowing effects throughout the the

    00:02:36.220 --> 00:02:37.060

    overall design.

    00:02:37.600 --> 00:02:42.060

    One was on this trailer and one was where the penguins were

    00:02:42.220 --> 00:02:44.820

    roasting marshmallows by a fire.

    00:02:45.440 --> 00:02:49.140

    And that is in another video that I have also posted as well,

    00:02:49.160 --> 00:02:50.500

    if you wanna take a look at that one.

    00:02:51.560 --> 00:02:55.500

    If you would like to learn more about creating two different glow effects and

    00:02:55.500 --> 00:02:58.340

    procreate, including the string lights. In this video,

    00:02:59.040 --> 00:03:03.640

    I created a reference guide to creating my favorite glow effects in procreate,

    00:03:04.340 --> 00:03:07.200

    and that includes the string lights shown in this video,

    00:03:07.420 --> 00:03:10.480

    as well as fire from the my other video.

    00:03:11.540 --> 00:03:16.320

    You can find the link to so that you can grab the guide in the description

    00:03:16.410 --> 00:03:21.400

    below this video as well. I will be sharing more process videos,

    00:03:21.860 --> 00:03:25.120

    so be sure to subscribe. Thank you for watching!
