creating glow effects in procreate - episode 9

video - Episode 9

In this video chat episode nine, we discuss incorporating story and glow effects in Procreate into your illustrations.

Having a story in mind when creating artwork is so important because it keeps you inspired and helps to bring out the creativity in what you are doing. It creates a deeper connection with your artwork and draws people into the story behind what you are creating.

When you're creating animals with storytelling in mind, giving your animals human characteristics or activities helps drive home a connection with your artwork.

When creating elements with glow effects in Procreate, make all of the details around the object that will glow first because you will need to add some shadowing and highlights to those objects to finish the glow effects.

Glow Effects in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.500 --> 00:00:02.620

    I am Denise Palmer

    00:00:02.840 --> 00:00:07.620

    And I am an illustrator artist and surface pattern designer working out of my

    00:00:07.620 --> 00:00:12.620

    studio close to the Gulf of Mexico, where water adventures and botanical

    00:00:12.620 --> 00:00:13.453

    Plants

    00:00:13.500 --> 00:00:14.500

    Surround my everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.060

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.060 --> 00:00:23.940

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:26.060 --> 00:00:27.320

    In this time-lapse video,

    00:00:27.960 --> 00:00:32.560

    I am creating two penguins that are roasting marshmallows by a

    00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:36.200

    glowing fire on an ice ledge in Antarctica.

    00:00:36.990 --> 00:00:39.880

    This was created for a custom illustration project,

    00:00:40.380 --> 00:00:43.760

    and if you would like to see more details about the project this was created

    00:00:43.860 --> 00:00:46.600

    for, you can find the link below the video.

    00:00:48.010 --> 00:00:51.970

    I had decided that these penguins were playful and mischievous,

    00:00:52.430 --> 00:00:57.290

    and I was creating a penguin town pattern design that needed to reflect that.

    00:00:57.830 --> 00:01:02.130

    So naturally I decided it needed penguins that were roasting marshmallows

    00:01:03.020 --> 00:01:05.710

    when I was creating these penguins in procreate.

    00:01:05.800 --> 00:01:10.030

    These particular penguins I imagined were elders of the town

    00:01:10.650 --> 00:01:15.630

    who had traveled the globe and in their travels had discovered humans and

    00:01:15.650 --> 00:01:18.350

    the fun of roasting marshmallows over the fire.

    00:01:19.330 --> 00:01:23.190

    And they were oblivious to the fact that fire melts ice,

    00:01:23.970 --> 00:01:26.270

    but they are roasting away anyways.

    00:01:27.750 --> 00:01:31.480

    They are relaxed in their lounge chairs and ready for their yummy,

    00:01:31.480 --> 00:01:32.840

    toasted marshmallows.

    00:01:32.940 --> 00:01:37.640

    Having a story in mind when you're creating artwork is

    00:01:37.860 --> 00:01:42.640

    so important because it keeps you inspired and it

    00:01:42.650 --> 00:01:47.440

    helps to bring out the creativity in what

    00:01:47.460 --> 00:01:48.293

    you are doing.

    00:01:48.340 --> 00:01:52.760

    It creates a deeper connection with your artwork and it draws people

    00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:57.840

    in into the story that is behind what you are creating.

    00:01:58.710 --> 00:01:59.110

    Also,

    00:01:59.110 --> 00:02:04.080

    when you're creating animals that you can tell a

    00:02:04.080 --> 00:02:04.590

    story,

    00:02:04.590 --> 00:02:09.400

    that is something that humans do naturally because

    00:02:09.780 --> 00:02:14.520

    the audience that is looking at your artwork or using your artwork,

    00:02:15.220 --> 00:02:16.080

    we are people,

    00:02:16.740 --> 00:02:21.480

    and giving your animals human characteristics

    00:02:21.700 --> 00:02:26.280

    or human activities really helps to drive home that connection.

    00:02:26.980 --> 00:02:31.120

    And so that's what you know, whether you're creating, you know,

    00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:35.000

    penguins that are roasting marshmallows or um, you know,

    00:02:35.320 --> 00:02:38.760

    a gator that is alligator, that is, you know,

    00:02:39.240 --> 00:02:40.440

    kayaking or something.

    00:02:40.820 --> 00:02:45.760

    Giving them human qualities is a great way to bring

    00:02:45.760 --> 00:02:48.360

    that connection to your artwork too.

    00:02:49.150 --> 00:02:53.600

    Even though the scene is daytime in the larger penguin town design,

    00:02:54.280 --> 00:02:59.280

    I wanted to make the fire glow to add that warmth and give you that feeling

    00:02:59.340 --> 00:03:00.920

    of contrast with the ice.

    00:03:02.340 --> 00:03:07.060

    I created all the elements around the fire first and then worked on the fire

    00:03:07.200 --> 00:03:11.340

    so that the scene was already set. When I started creating the fire piece,

    00:03:13.320 --> 00:03:16.080

    I created the flames and glowing effects and procreate,

    00:03:16.500 --> 00:03:18.040

    and I also added some smoke,

    00:03:18.620 --> 00:03:23.320

    but I decided not to keep the smoke in the final design since it was daytime

    00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:26.880

    and harder to see anyways. And lastly,

    00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:32.160

    I am adding some shadowing to the fire and the elements

    00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:34.080

    surrounding the fire as well.

    00:03:34.910 --> 00:03:39.800

    This is the finished design that is part of the larger penguin town design

    00:03:40.020 --> 00:03:43.960

    for this project. They are nestled into their own little nook,

    00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:46.400

    roasting marshmallows by a fire,

    00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:50.920

    and with little fish attracted to the glow on the ice ledge.

    00:03:51.500 --> 00:03:55.640

    If you would like to learn more about creating two different glow effects and

    00:03:55.640 --> 00:03:58.240

    procreate, including the fire, in this video,

    00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:03.240

    I created a reference guide to creating my favorite glow effects and procreate.

    00:04:03.700 --> 00:04:06.440

    You can find the link to the guide below this video.

    00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:11.960

    I will be sharing more process videos, so be sure to subscribe.

    00:04:12.610 --> 00:04:13.800

    Thank you for watching!
