creating a penguin bird house building in procreate - episode 11

video - Episode 11

Buildings are a fantastic illustration subject to add to your portfolio of work, and I am excited to share some tips in today's episode on how to create buildings in Procreate.

There is more to drawing buildings than the structure itself. Some things to consider are the location, season of year, the surroundings, and who resides inside the walls of your building. In this case, mine were little penguins that lived in Antarctica.

Drawing A Cute Bird House Building in Procreate

When drawing buildings, using the Procreate canvas drawing guides makes sketching your lines for the building much easier. Use the customizations within the canvas drawing guide settings to adjust them for the project you are working on.

I have put together a Beginner's Guide To Drawing Buildings In Procreate that goes into more detail about drawing buildings and using the guides. You can get the guide below!

Pink Penguin Bird House in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:04.180

    I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:09.180

    artist and surface pattern designer working outta my studio close to the

    00:00:09.180 --> 00:00:13.940

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my

    00:00:14.140 --> 00:00:14.973

    everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.980

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:24.560 --> 00:00:25.500

    In this episode,

    00:00:25.780 --> 00:00:30.260

    I will share about the progress of this Penguin Bird house building

    00:00:30.740 --> 00:00:32.220

    I created in Procreate.

    00:00:33.090 --> 00:00:37.220

    This house is part of a much larger design for a custom illustration project,

    00:00:37.760 --> 00:00:42.380

    and I will share how it turned out in the finished design at the end of this

    00:00:42.380 --> 00:00:45.580

    video. So stay till the end to see it.

    00:00:46.640 --> 00:00:51.290

    Procreate has some really great guide customizations to their canvas

    00:00:51.290 --> 00:00:54.170

    drawing guides that I use for drawing buildings.

    00:00:54.510 --> 00:00:58.890

    And if you have not used the canvas guides, I highly recommend trying them out.

    00:00:59.630 --> 00:01:03.430

    I also put together my favorite ways to use the drawing guides in a drawing

    00:01:03.670 --> 00:01:08.590

    buildings guidebook that I have linked to in the description below this video if

    00:01:08.590 --> 00:01:09.870

    you wanna grab a copy of it.

    00:01:10.340 --> 00:01:13.270

    This little penguin house is a very simple building design,

    00:01:13.530 --> 00:01:18.390

    but I made sure to note the important details that I wanted to include in

    00:01:18.390 --> 00:01:20.830

    the finished illustration in my sketch.

    00:01:22.130 --> 00:01:25.580

    Your sketch is your blueprint for your finished house illustration,

    00:01:26.120 --> 00:01:29.820

    so use it to guide you as you create your artwork and procreate.

    00:01:30.210 --> 00:01:31.980

    Once I got the main details in place,

    00:01:32.300 --> 00:01:36.340

    I continued adding textures and more fun details to this house.

    00:01:36.960 --> 00:01:41.420

    Adding in details is the fun part. It brings the artwork together,

    00:01:42.090 --> 00:01:46.900

    adds character to your illustrations and helps to drive home the story you are

    00:01:46.900 --> 00:01:47.980

    telling with your artwork.

    00:01:48.460 --> 00:01:52.220

    I wanted this penguin house to be reminiscent of a bird house,

    00:01:52.720 --> 00:01:55.860

    and that's why I included the upper round window detail.

    00:01:56.640 --> 00:01:59.860

    But this house is for penguins in Antarctica,

    00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:02.020

    so it's a different kind of birdhouse.

    00:02:02.960 --> 00:02:07.860

    And even though this design wasn't a holiday design per se,

    00:02:08.400 --> 00:02:12.740

    but I still had to include a wreath because it's snowing,

    00:02:13.240 --> 00:02:17.780

    and I really wanted to have a wreath on the house

    00:02:18.160 --> 00:02:20.500

    and add that. Welcome to my bird house.

    00:02:20.610 --> 00:02:25.180

    Feel here I am starting to play around with some of the details

    00:02:25.480 --> 00:02:26.620

    and changing things up,

    00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:31.860

    but ultimately I ended up keeping the little curved lines on the roof and

    00:02:32.020 --> 00:02:36.460

    I ended up removing the lines that I add here and

    00:02:36.570 --> 00:02:39.020

    removed the W Reef because with everything else,

    00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:44.260

    it really drove home a holiday feel, and that's not what I wanted to have,

    00:02:44.640 --> 00:02:49.340

    but I did keep the bow and the heart because it's still signifies a

    00:02:49.340 --> 00:02:51.580

    welcome to my little house feel.

    00:02:51.800 --> 00:02:56.660

    So this is how the penguin Bird house looks in the finished design.

    00:02:57.080 --> 00:03:01.800

    If you would like to get my drawing buildings in procreate tips guide where I

    00:03:01.800 --> 00:03:05.880

    share my favorite ways to use the canvas drawing guides to create buildings in

    00:03:05.880 --> 00:03:10.480

    procreate, you can find the link to it in the description below this video.

    00:03:10.990 --> 00:03:12.880

    It's how I've drawn all my buildings,

    00:03:13.140 --> 00:03:17.920

    so it's a great resource and it's also how I've drawn some of the

    00:03:18.040 --> 00:03:21.240

    castles that I'll be sharing. In a later episode,

    00:03:22.840 --> 00:03:26.640

    I will be sharing more process videos, so be sure to subscribe.

    00:03:27.210 --> 00:03:28.280

    Thank you for watching.
