creating a thatched leaf penguin house in procreate- episode 8

video - Episode 8

Drawing whimsical, playful houses and buildings in Procreate is a great way to bring a feeling of home to your illustrations.

Buildings are home to our dreams.

They can also be home to mischievous penguins living in Antarctica with bird-like houses, throwing snowballs with giant slingshots, and roasting marshmallows on the ice and snow.

In today's video chat episode number eight, I share what I was thinking about as I was creating this leaf thatched house in Procreate for a custom illustration project.

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:01.780

    I am

    00:00:01.780 --> 00:00:04.180

    Denise Palmer, and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:09.180

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:09.180 --> 00:00:13.940

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my

    00:00:14.140 --> 00:00:14.973

    everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.980

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:25.040 --> 00:00:26.900

    In this short time-lapse video,

    00:00:27.780 --> 00:00:32.260

    I am illustrating a little penguin house that

    00:00:32.720 --> 00:00:37.580

    is going to be at the edge of Antarctica

    00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:43.100

    and a playful penguin design that I will share at the end of this

    00:00:43.100 --> 00:00:45.380

    timelapse video. But I,

    00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:50.820

    in this video you can see that I'm going to incorporate the thatched

    00:00:50.970 --> 00:00:54.340

    roof sketch into the finished, finished illustration.

    00:00:55.640 --> 00:01:00.620

    And I am just adding in some of the detail because I already have

    00:01:00.620 --> 00:01:02.460

    the sketch of the house laid out,

    00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:06.620

    and I was just thinking about what would a penguin's house look like

    00:01:07.880 --> 00:01:11.170

    that wasn't your typical like igloo or something.

    00:01:12.180 --> 00:01:16.720

    And I had in my mind that these playful penguins were

    00:01:16.910 --> 00:01:18.440

    also mischievous in a way.

    00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:23.520

    And so I had to make sure that there were some details that

    00:01:23.670 --> 00:01:27.880

    reflect that in the overall design. This is the,

    00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:33.320

    a closeup of the finished pattern design and with the penguin house

    00:01:33.320 --> 00:01:34.120

    in it,

    00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:38.240

    although there are several other different houses and some other details that do

    00:01:39.100 --> 00:01:41.240

    add some mischievousness to it,

    00:01:43.050 --> 00:01:45.300

    here is a more zoomed out view.

    00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:50.140

    You can see I have penguins that are throwing snowballs and

    00:01:50.140 --> 00:01:55.140

    roasting marshmallows. So, and I named this pattern, um,

    00:01:55.250 --> 00:01:56.300

    penguin Playground.

    00:01:57.320 --> 00:02:00.820

    For more details on the project that this was created for,

    00:02:01.080 --> 00:02:04.460
