How To Draw Buildings In Procreate: Flower Shop Full Process - Episode 13

video - Episode 13

There were a multitude of things I could have drawn to capture England, but I wanted to draw what I imagined the city to look like through my filtered lens.

That is what we do as artists, is see things through our eyes.

Simply put, that is where your style comes from, from how you see the world. It starts there from your filtered vision of something.

In this episode, I am illustrating a flower shop building in Procreate, and the setting is an English storefront in London.

The different techniques used in Procreate include using the canvas drawing guides and features like symmetry and copying areas of the canvas to draw the sketch for the building and add in the colored illustration layers for the flower shop building.

I have also created a Beginner's Guide To Drawing Buildings In Procreate that you can get below this video and learn some of my biggest tips for illustrating buildings digitally in Procreate.

How To Draw Buildings In Procreate Flower Shop Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:04.180

    I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:09.180

    artist and surface pattern designer working outta my studio close to the

    00:00:09.180 --> 00:00:13.940

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my

    00:00:14.140 --> 00:00:14.973

    everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.980

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:25.110 --> 00:00:27.340

    Hello and welcome to today's video.

    00:00:28.060 --> 00:00:32.380

    I will share about creating buildings in procreate in this video,

    00:00:33.360 --> 00:00:38.300

    and this particular illustration was for a custom illustration commission for a

    00:00:38.300 --> 00:00:40.660

    client that I completed in the past.

    00:00:41.160 --> 00:00:45.100

    So I'm excited to share about drawing buildings in procreate with you.

    00:00:45.600 --> 00:00:49.660

    But hey, before we get too far into this video chat episode,

    00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:52.460

    if you really want to get into drawing buildings,

    00:00:53.060 --> 00:00:56.300

    I want to share with you something I created to discuss, uh,

    00:00:56.300 --> 00:01:00.900

    further how to start drawing buildings in my beginner's guide to drawing

    00:01:01.180 --> 00:01:02.260

    buildings and procreate.

    00:01:02.840 --> 00:01:06.900

    You can grab a copy of the guide at the link in the description below this video

    00:01:07.400 --> 00:01:11.420

    if you want to take what we discussed today a little bit further and start

    00:01:11.420 --> 00:01:14.340

    drawing your own structures. Okay, let's get into it.

    00:01:14.860 --> 00:01:18.900

    I wanted to share the sketch process for this building with you since it is

    00:01:19.140 --> 00:01:23.140

    somewhat detailed and I used the drawing guides to get my lines straighter.

    00:01:23.240 --> 00:01:25.620

    If you are doing a building that is more whimsical,

    00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:29.740

    you don't need exactly straight lines. Still use guides for most buildings.

    00:01:30.160 --> 00:01:33.500

    It helps to get the spacing the way I want it for the different details.

    00:01:34.220 --> 00:01:36.100

    I use lots of different guides for drawing,

    00:01:36.240 --> 00:01:38.260

    but since this is a front facing building,

    00:01:38.540 --> 00:01:41.700

    I mainly used grids and symmetry for it. Plus,

    00:01:41.820 --> 00:01:45.340

    I did some copying pasting for when I forgot to turn on symmetry.

    00:01:45.770 --> 00:01:49.740

    This project was for an illustration about England. I've never been there,

    00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:52.500

    but visiting one day is on my bucket list.

    00:01:52.590 --> 00:01:56.020

    There are tons of things that I could have drawn to capture England,

    00:01:56.160 --> 00:02:00.780

    but I wanted to draw what I imagined the city to look like through my

    00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:04.900

    filtered lens. That is what we do as artists, as an artist and illustrator.

    00:02:05.480 --> 00:02:10.460

    We see things through our own eyes and we tell stories from what we see.

    00:02:10.720 --> 00:02:15.220

    Simply put that is where your style comes from, from how you see the world.

    00:02:15.440 --> 00:02:18.340

    It starts there from your filtered vision of something.

    00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:20.900

    For this project and illustration,

    00:02:21.540 --> 00:02:24.860

    I imagined walking through this city and into these storefronts,

    00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:28.660

    so of course there had to be a flower shop that provides all the flowers to

    00:02:28.660 --> 00:02:30.140

    decorate the storefronts too.

    00:02:30.680 --> 00:02:35.300

    Not to mention flowers in general to people needing to cheer someone up as they

    00:02:35.450 --> 00:02:39.740

    walk by the store and decide to go in and buy some flowers

    00:02:40.520 --> 00:02:44.580

    to give to someone that they love and care about. In my imagination,

    00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:49.500

    the city was alive with people walking around, cars driving by,

    00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:53.740

    and the flower shop owner watering the flowers next to her store.

    00:02:54.140 --> 00:02:58.220

    I will share a finished preview of this at the end of this video so you can see

    00:02:58.220 --> 00:02:59.800

    what the finished design looks like.

    00:03:00.340 --> 00:03:03.400

    So stay until the end to get a chance to see it.

    00:03:04.460 --> 00:03:05.800

    As I was creating this store,

    00:03:06.020 --> 00:03:10.720

    I'm thinking about how it comes to life during the day and what it is like to

    00:03:10.820 --> 00:03:14.240

    be here in this place at this moment in time.

    00:03:14.700 --> 00:03:16.240

    If I was the store owner,

    00:03:16.830 --> 00:03:21.800

    what would the windows look like and what would I put outside to draw customers

    00:03:21.900 --> 00:03:22.733

    in?

    00:03:22.760 --> 00:03:27.440

    I am setting the scene for this city in my illustrations for each building I

    00:03:27.440 --> 00:03:31.680

    created and there were quite a few buildings I was illustrating for this

    00:03:31.680 --> 00:03:32.330

    project.

    00:03:32.330 --> 00:03:36.920

    These flowers are very simple that I am creating here to add some color and

    00:03:36.920 --> 00:03:41.760

    texture and pull the colors from the rest of what the design will be later on.

    00:03:41.820 --> 00:03:46.640

    Adding in the colors of the flowers at this point to me made it start to really

    00:03:46.670 --> 00:03:50.640

    feel like a flower shop. It is the little details that bring things together.

    00:03:51.560 --> 00:03:54.560

    Normally, I save these little details for later,

    00:03:54.780 --> 00:03:59.560

    but I felt that I needed to get the florals in place to make my mind envision

    00:03:59.830 --> 00:04:04.800

    this floral shop even further and keep me immersed in the flow of this

    00:04:04.800 --> 00:04:09.040

    illustration. I was thinking about being the flower shop owner again,

    00:04:09.220 --> 00:04:14.160

    and these top clusters of flowers in these buckets would have some natural

    00:04:14.330 --> 00:04:18.960

    craft paper around them to make customers want to select different stems from

    00:04:18.960 --> 00:04:19.793

    these buckets.

    00:04:19.980 --> 00:04:24.800

    It also adds some variation from the other side of the storefront so that as

    00:04:24.800 --> 00:04:28.920

    you take everything in, you see the different details along the way. Plus,

    00:04:29.160 --> 00:04:33.280

    I was saving creating the front door for later because I was really looking

    00:04:33.280 --> 00:04:34.800

    forward to illustrating the door.

    00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:39.800

    I don't know what it was about the door that made me look forward to it the most

    00:04:40.110 --> 00:04:42.040

    because that doesn't really make sense,

    00:04:42.540 --> 00:04:46.920

    but it was definitely a motivator for me to keep going maybe because I had

    00:04:46.920 --> 00:04:51.920

    looked at paint colors and over a hundred different images of doors to get the

    00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:53.040

    feel of buildings,

    00:04:53.580 --> 00:04:57.840

    and I had drove around our town and other cities and taken lots of photographs

    00:04:57.980 --> 00:05:02.960

    of buildings that I loved that inspired me to love the doors

    00:05:03.100 --> 00:05:03.933

    so much.

    00:05:04.120 --> 00:05:08.920

    I also was imagining this door opening and closing with customers going in and

    00:05:08.920 --> 00:05:09.460

    out,

    00:05:09.460 --> 00:05:12.880

    and that there was probably a little dinging sound that would happen when the

    00:05:12.880 --> 00:05:17.720

    door opened and the sign would tap against the glass some as it was opened and

    00:05:17.720 --> 00:05:22.520

    closed. Another major part of the buildings were the names of the storefronts.

    00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:27.840

    I had a lot of fun naming my stores and I really thought about each shop and

    00:05:27.840 --> 00:05:28.680

    what would be in it.

    00:05:29.440 --> 00:05:33.640

    I also relied on some friends who are from England as to what stores and

    00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:35.280

    restaurants are really there.

    00:05:36.070 --> 00:05:40.640

    Some of them I never would've thought of without their real feedback and

    00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:43.640

    insights. You know who you are and thank you, my friends.

    00:05:44.260 --> 00:05:49.160

    You are amazing and I just loved

    00:05:49.160 --> 00:05:52.240

    getting to chat with you about, uh, the city.

    00:05:53.440 --> 00:05:57.960

    I actually struggled with the store's name a bit and realized that bloomers

    00:05:58.540 --> 00:06:00.480

    can be considered like underwear,

    00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:05.800

    and this was definitely not an underwear store. So in the finished illustration,

    00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:10.520

    I ended up changing the name to Bloom Florist. Every city,

    00:06:10.730 --> 00:06:11.563

    every country,

    00:06:11.780 --> 00:06:15.640

    and every home reflects something about the people who live there.

    00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:20.360

    It is a part of us and our story of navigating this life,

    00:06:20.900 --> 00:06:25.680

    and we as illustrators are here to share it with the world In the artwork we

    00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:26.440

    create,

    00:06:26.440 --> 00:06:31.240

    buildings are home to our dreams and are also places where we keep our most

    00:06:31.840 --> 00:06:36.800

    treasured possessions and they have a story within their walls that begs

    00:06:36.820 --> 00:06:38.400

    our inspiration to tell it.

    00:06:38.860 --> 00:06:43.320

    One of the most magical things I have found about being an illustrator and

    00:06:43.320 --> 00:06:48.160

    pattern designer is that I get to imagine the lives of everything I create,

    00:06:48.750 --> 00:06:53.240

    even buildings, because even though they are not living, breathing things,

    00:06:53.750 --> 00:06:57.200

    they have a voice and it is our job to give the artwork.

    00:06:57.660 --> 00:07:00.880

    We create a platform for their voices to be heard,

    00:07:01.980 --> 00:07:03.000

    to tell their stories,

    00:07:03.500 --> 00:07:08.160

    and lift the imagination of the world around us to see the story and

    00:07:08.410 --> 00:07:10.400

    every moment, every memory,

    00:07:10.980 --> 00:07:15.360

    and every part of our lives that connects us. Stories are connections,

    00:07:15.540 --> 00:07:19.800

    and we create connections with our artwork by transporting not only ourselves

    00:07:20.390 --> 00:07:22.600

    into the lives of the subjects we are drawing,

    00:07:23.060 --> 00:07:24.840

    but our clients and their customers.

    00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:29.810

    Here is the finished floral shop illustration in the final project,

    00:07:30.470 --> 00:07:35.170

    and it was so much fun to imagine this floor shop and the store

    00:07:35.170 --> 00:07:39.970

    owner watering her plants that she grows nearby in such a big

    00:07:39.970 --> 00:07:40.803

    city.

    00:07:40.870 --> 00:07:45.290

    It makes me think about how we carve out what we love and make space for it in

    00:07:45.290 --> 00:07:47.610

    our lives. As I mentioned earlier,

    00:07:48.250 --> 00:07:53.050

    I have some additional content for you in this episode in My Beginner's Guide

    00:07:53.070 --> 00:07:56.610

    to Drawing Buildings and Procreate, which you can get a copy of.

    00:07:56.630 --> 00:07:59.090

    At the link I put in the video description,

    00:07:59.850 --> 00:08:04.130

    I dive a little deeper into this subject to help you envision your own story and

    00:08:04.130 --> 00:08:06.890

    details for creating your illustrated structures.

    00:08:07.710 --> 00:08:11.850

    So don't forget to grab your copy of the guide right now at the link in the

    00:08:11.850 --> 00:08:13.210

    description below the video,

    00:08:15.090 --> 00:08:17.930

    I will be sharing more process videos just like this one.

    00:08:18.230 --> 00:08:21.770

    So be sure to subscribe. Thank you for watching.
