Creating Willow Eucalyptus In Procreate - Episode 15

video - Episode 15

willow eucalyptus leaves in procreate on ipad

In this episode, I am creating willow eucalyptus leaves in Procreate.

The willow eucalyptus plant leaves are used as filler greenery elements in a much larger design. So, I kept the stems of the leaf elements separate and on their own layers so I could easily move them around later to fill in different areas of the finished design.

Drawing Willow Eucalyptus Plants In Procreate

A tip for creating filler elements for more extensive illustrations is to create a grouping of separated leaves instead of one large branch when creating filler plant elements in Procreate.

You can then use the separated leaves to fill in areas and also nestle the leaves next to and on top of each other to create larger, more dynamic branches, which add variation to your designs.

Willow Eucalyptus Plants In Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.585 --> 00:00:02.665

    I am Denise Palmer,

    00:00:02.885 --> 00:00:04.225

    And I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.285 --> 00:00:09.225

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:09.225 --> 00:00:12.145

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and

    00:00:12.145 --> 00:00:13.745

    botanical plants surround

    00:00:13.765 --> 00:00:14.598

    My everyday life.

    00:00:15.135 --> 00:00:19.145

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.145 --> 00:00:22.905

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration,

    00:00:23.165 --> 00:00:25.965

    art, and design. In today's episode,

    00:00:26.405 --> 00:00:30.765

    I am sharing about the progress of drawing these willow eucalyptus leaves

    00:00:31.445 --> 00:00:32.805

    I created and Procreate.

    00:00:33.625 --> 00:00:38.255

    These leaves became part of a much larger design for a custom illustration

    00:00:38.255 --> 00:00:39.088

    project,

    00:00:39.155 --> 00:00:43.335

    and I will share how it turned out in the finished design at the end of this

    00:00:43.335 --> 00:00:47.295

    video. These leaves were filler elements in my design,

    00:00:47.475 --> 00:00:48.735

    so as I was drawing them,

    00:00:48.935 --> 00:00:52.975

    I wanted to keep parts of the leaves and stems separated from each other.

    00:00:53.685 --> 00:00:58.295

    This way I could move them around independently and not have them be just

    00:00:58.475 --> 00:01:02.295

    one large willow eucalyptus branch on my Procreate canvas.

    00:01:02.875 --> 00:01:05.455

    But by grouping them together as I draw them,

    00:01:05.815 --> 00:01:09.895

    I can think about how these leaves would interweave in the design and create

    00:01:10.215 --> 00:01:10.835

    movement.

    00:01:10.835 --> 00:01:15.575

    So my tip for today is to try creating a grouping of leaves instead of one large

    00:01:15.575 --> 00:01:17.975

    branch. When you are creating filler plants,

    00:01:18.675 --> 00:01:20.815

    it makes it easier to move them around later,

    00:01:21.235 --> 00:01:25.855

    and you can always nestle a leaf next to each other to create larger stems.

    00:01:26.085 --> 00:01:30.855

    Here is a peak at the finished design where I incorporated these leaves into

    00:01:31.045 --> 00:01:33.535

    this pattern design I created for Australia.

    00:01:33.955 --> 00:01:38.935

    Having the separate branches made it easy to place them around the animals too.

    00:01:39.685 --> 00:01:42.415

    This week's episode was rather short and sweet,

    00:01:43.035 --> 00:01:45.975

    but next week's video chat episode is a special one,

    00:01:46.195 --> 00:01:50.775

    so be sure to subscribe to get reminders of new episodes each week. If you

    00:01:50.775 --> 00:01:54.535

    would like to learn more about the process I use for drawing plants in

    00:01:54.535 --> 00:01:55.368

    Procreate,

    00:01:55.615 --> 00:01:58.855

    I have a free beginner mini course where I share how to create leaves,

    00:01:59.315 --> 00:02:03.975

    my tips for sketching plants, and my full list of favorite procreate brushes.

    00:02:04.485 --> 00:02:09.255

    Plus a free download of a favorite brush I created and I use

    00:02:09.355 --> 00:02:11.335

    all the time, which is my monoline brush.

    00:02:11.955 --> 00:02:16.935

    It also includes color palettes and three step-by-step illustration lessons too.

    00:02:17.195 --> 00:02:19.735

    You can find that in the description.

    00:02:21.135 --> 00:02:24.935

    I will be sharing more process videos, so be sure to subscribe.

    00:02:25.425 --> 00:02:26.455

    Thank you for watching!
