Christmas Black Bear In Procreate - Episode 20

video - Episode 20

christmas presents on the back of a black bear procreate artwork on the ipad

In this episode, I am creating a Christmas holiday black bear in Procreate and talking about how your own travel adventures can inspire your artwork.

We had traveled to Blue Ridge, Georgia, one year for a family vacation, and I was inspired by the mountain scenery. The cabin we stayed in was full of black bear items as black bears roamed that particular area frequently. Though, we didn't get to see any while we were there.

Creating A Christmas Black Bear In Procreate

So, I decided to create a design inspired by the mountains and black bears that I imagined lived around the cabin and what they would do if they found holiday presents and were good at delivering presents instead of potentially eating them.

Christmas Holiday Black Bear In Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.135 --> 00:00:03.695

    I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:03.795 --> 00:00:08.575

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:08.575 --> 00:00:13.335

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my

    00:00:13.535 --> 00:00:14.368

    everyday life.

    00:00:14.565 --> 00:00:18.535

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:18.535 --> 00:00:23.375

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:24.185 --> 00:00:27.375

    Hello and welcome again to another holiday episode.

    00:00:28.145 --> 00:00:32.695

    Today I want talk about how your own adventures can inspire your artwork.

    00:00:33.415 --> 00:00:38.015

    I usually love all things tropical because my home is near the ocean and water.

    00:00:38.555 --> 00:00:42.055

    But our family took a vacation recently to Blue Ridge,

    00:00:42.055 --> 00:00:45.735

    Georgia and stayed in an adorable mountain cabin.

    00:00:46.275 --> 00:00:50.415

    It was such a change of scenery and there were so many items in the cabin with

    00:00:50.425 --> 00:00:53.975

    black bears that I fell in love with the black bears myself,

    00:00:54.395 --> 00:00:57.215

    and needed to create some black bear artwork.

    00:00:57.915 --> 00:01:00.855

    We didn't get to see a real black bear while we were there,

    00:01:01.155 --> 00:01:05.815

    but I imagined what Christmas would be like with a family of black bears

    00:01:05.815 --> 00:01:07.135

    living close to the cabin.

    00:01:07.795 --> 00:01:12.215

    So I created a Christmas design with a black bear who loves fish and Christmas

    00:01:12.215 --> 00:01:14.215

    gifts at the center of the design.

    00:01:14.755 --> 00:01:19.295

    And you can see him coming to life here in the sketch with a ski board strapped

    00:01:19.295 --> 00:01:23.375

    to his back with presents a wreath, some forest greenery,

    00:01:23.675 --> 00:01:27.055

    and a pot of honey. Once the sketch was done,

    00:01:27.375 --> 00:01:29.135

    I added in his dark,

    00:01:29.275 --> 00:01:34.095

    almost black fur and all the details that capture this incredible animal in

    00:01:34.375 --> 00:01:35.208

    Procreate.

    00:01:35.415 --> 00:01:39.175

    I usually like to give my animals something fun and interesting that they're

    00:01:39.175 --> 00:01:40.008

    doing,

    00:01:40.035 --> 00:01:44.535

    and so putting the presents and everything on top of his back as if he's

    00:01:44.655 --> 00:01:46.335

    carrying it somewhere, um,

    00:01:46.675 --> 00:01:50.855

    was a fun interpretation of the bear getting into mischief.

    00:01:51.225 --> 00:01:53.015

    Using the sketch as a guide,

    00:01:53.335 --> 00:01:57.815

    I added more details with coloring in the presents and wreath and greenery,

    00:01:58.275 --> 00:02:02.175

    and of course the jar of honey. I don't know if bears like honey,

    00:02:02.355 --> 00:02:05.495

    but it was something that was not traditionally Christmas,

    00:02:05.875 --> 00:02:10.655

    so I had to incorporate it into the giftable items on the skiboards.

    00:02:10.995 --> 00:02:14.815

    Adding in the final details of the artwork,

    00:02:15.255 --> 00:02:17.055

    creating the lines on the presents,

    00:02:17.195 --> 00:02:20.735

    and bringing in the berry details on the wreath,

    00:02:21.155 --> 00:02:23.215

    brings in the holiday colors,

    00:02:23.915 --> 00:02:28.895

    as well as the last little details of the bows and the little bees

    00:02:28.915 --> 00:02:30.615

    around the honeypot.

    00:02:31.215 --> 00:02:35.375

    I added in fish and flourishing details around this bear,

    00:02:35.995 --> 00:02:40.935

    and you can see those details here in this finished design with

    00:02:41.075 --> 00:02:45.855

    the border and flourishing that create this finished design.

    00:02:46.615 --> 00:02:51.535

    I could see this black bear artwork on a holiday card or as a throw pillow

    00:02:51.995 --> 00:02:56.055

    or used on fabric as a blanket to snuggle with by the fireplace.

    00:02:56.975 --> 00:03:00.725

    I also think it would make really fun Christmas pajamas too.

    00:03:01.115 --> 00:03:05.365

    This is the artwork shown on a card that is in my portfolio,

    00:03:06.065 --> 00:03:10.965

    as well as this is a finished pattern design where I created the

    00:03:10.965 --> 00:03:15.485

    elements in a repeat, where he's got the fish,

    00:03:15.745 --> 00:03:19.045

    as if they're like on fishing hooks on his back.

    00:03:19.425 --> 00:03:24.005

    And little details that would make a fun repeat.

    00:03:26.165 --> 00:03:28.965

    I will be sharing more process videos just like this one,

    00:03:29.265 --> 00:03:33.005

    so be sure to subscribe. Thank you for watching!
