sketching thistle flowers in procreate- episode 3

video - Episode 3

When I started working on floral illustrations for my son’s wedding, I knew they were going to be hand-painted with watercolor. But, even though I was going to paint traditionally on paper, I still started the project with sketching my florals in Procreate.

In this video chat I talk about why I love using Procreate for sketching.

Procreate brushes used:

  • For creating the sketch, I used either the MaxU Dirty Bold Sharp Brush or the 6B Pencil (standard Procreate brush) - it’s been a minute since I created this artwork, it could be either one.

Sketching Thistle in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:24.620 --> 00:00:28.480

    In this TimeLapse video, I'm sketching thistle in Procreate,

    00:00:28.700 --> 00:00:33.080

    and I list the Procreate brushes I use in the description below this video.

    00:00:33.780 --> 00:00:36.960

    If you would like to learn more about the process I use for sketching,

    00:00:37.140 --> 00:00:40.320

    you can get my sketching guide below this video as well.

    00:00:42.850 --> 00:00:46.490

    I used to sketch on paper, but ever since I got my iPad,

    00:00:46.860 --> 00:00:51.570

    which was quite a few years ago now I only sketch on my iPad and

    00:00:51.570 --> 00:00:54.090

    procreate because I love it so much.

    00:00:54.810 --> 00:00:59.090

    I wish I could say that expensive equipment is not needed. Well,

    00:00:59.090 --> 00:01:03.610

    technically you don't need it, but it does make drawing a lot easier,

    00:01:03.990 --> 00:01:07.810

    at least for me. The thistle I'm sketching here,

    00:01:08.090 --> 00:01:12.610

    I created for the watercolor paintings I was creating for my son and

    00:01:12.810 --> 00:01:16.770

    daughter-in-law's wedding two design their wedding invitations for them.

    00:01:17.270 --> 00:01:19.890

    So even though I'm drawing this and procreate,

    00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:23.090

    they were traditionally hand painted in watercolor.

    00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:26.490

    Once I got the rough drawing in place,

    00:01:26.890 --> 00:01:31.530

    I refined the sketch to really bring the details out by making little

    00:01:31.530 --> 00:01:34.810

    adjustments as I layer the sketches on top of each other.

    00:01:35.530 --> 00:01:38.450

    I do this so I'm not starting another sketch from scratch,

    00:01:38.910 --> 00:01:43.370

    and so the first sketch helps me build up a better version of the drawing that

    00:01:43.370 --> 00:01:45.810

    then I can then use for painting these flowers.

    00:01:47.360 --> 00:01:51.250

    Here is a look at the pattern design that I created with all the artwork for

    00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:52.233

    this project,

    00:01:52.990 --> 00:01:56.810

    and we used it as a backer design for their wedding invitations.

    00:01:58.890 --> 00:02:02.770
