Illustrating banksia plant in procreate - episode 6

video - Episode 6

In this video, I share how I created custom artwork for the Australian and New Zealand regions, featuring the beautiful Banksia plants. In this timelapse video, I take you through the intricate details of the Banksia's flowers, all created with a fuzzy look to capture the plant's unique texture.

When creating this artwork, it was helpful to think about the different shapes that could help bring the plant to life. For instance, I wanted to capture the plant's furry look, so thinking about the plant having fur enabled me to bring that detail to life in my illustration.

Enjoy watching this timelapse video chat episode that showcases the beauty of Banksia plants and the creative process and where I share inspiration and insights into the world of botanical illustration and how to think differently about the shapes and textures that make each plant unique.

Procreate brushes used:

  • For creating the sketch, I used MaxU Dirty Bold Sharp Brush

  • For filling in color, I used my Monoline Brush (available here)

  • For the details, I used the Inka Brush (a standard Procreate brush you can find in the Inking library)

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:02.620

    I am Denise Palmer

    00:00:02.840 --> 00:00:07.620

    And I am an illustrator artist and surface pattern designer working out of my

    00:00:07.620 --> 00:00:12.100

    studio close to the Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and

    00:00:12.100 --> 00:00:12.660

    botanical

    00:00:12.660 --> 00:00:13.493

    Plants

    00:00:13.540 --> 00:00:14.540

    surround my everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.340

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art,

    00:00:23.400 --> 00:00:24.233

    and design.

    00:00:24.720 --> 00:00:28.540

    If you would like to learn more about the process I use for drawing plants in

    00:00:28.540 --> 00:00:29.373

    Procreate,

    00:00:29.580 --> 00:00:32.820

    I have a free beginner mini course where I share how to create leaves,

    00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:37.780

    my tips for sketching plants and my full list of favorite Procreate brushes.

    00:00:38.250 --> 00:00:43.060

    Plus a free download of a favorite brush I created and I

    00:00:43.160 --> 00:00:45.540

    use all the time, which is my monoline brush

    00:00:46.200 --> 00:00:50.940

    It also includes color palettes and three step-by-step illustration lessons too.

    00:00:51.560 --> 00:00:54.020

    You can find that in the description below

    00:00:55.170 --> 00:01:00.070

    In this time-lapse video, I'm creating these banksia plants in procreate.

    00:01:00.830 --> 00:01:05.630

    I created these for a custom pattern design project that reflected the

    00:01:05.630 --> 00:01:08.750

    Australian and New Zealand region of the world.

    00:01:09.700 --> 00:01:12.170

    These plants are used in the pattern design

    00:01:12.330 --> 00:01:14.690

    I will share with you at the end of this video.

    00:01:15.930 --> 00:01:20.290

    I started out with a quick sketch to get the details of this very interesting

    00:01:20.290 --> 00:01:25.010

    looking plant as it has some skinny leaves and this particular variety

    00:01:25.140 --> 00:01:29.730

    looks fuzzy to me, so I definitely wanted to capture that in the illustration.

    00:01:30.800 --> 00:01:35.600

    I also added in some lines at the top of the plant because the

    00:01:35.910 --> 00:01:38.360

    tops are a little bit different looking as well.

    00:01:39.350 --> 00:01:44.070

    I started with a base color and then added in a base texture

    00:01:44.160 --> 00:01:45.270

    color with my brush,

    00:01:46.170 --> 00:01:49.510

    and I usually have an idea of the colors that I want to use,

    00:01:49.850 --> 00:01:54.790

    but I do like to play around with different colors as I

    00:01:54.790 --> 00:01:58.870

    am creating my illustrations because it's fun to see

    00:01:59.700 --> 00:02:04.310

    what colors that you end up with because you may think, oh, I want to have this,

    00:02:04.310 --> 00:02:05.430

    this deep orange color,

    00:02:05.690 --> 00:02:09.430

    or I want it to have a different kind of hint of color to it.

    00:02:09.770 --> 00:02:13.430

    So you can see I'm playing around with some of the colors here.

    00:02:14.480 --> 00:02:17.450

    Once I kind of decided what colors I wanted to go with,

    00:02:17.970 --> 00:02:22.490

    I added in a base texture color with my brush, uh,

    00:02:22.740 --> 00:02:25.610

    along the shape of the plant,

    00:02:26.390 --> 00:02:30.850

    and then I added in some darker oranges at the base of the

    00:02:31.190 --> 00:02:32.023

    of the plant.

    00:02:32.630 --> 00:02:37.480

    This is starting to give it that fuzzy feel that I was really hoping to get

    00:02:37.710 --> 00:02:39.280

    with this illustration,

    00:02:40.020 --> 00:02:45.000

    and I end up adding the same kind of effect to

    00:02:45.230 --> 00:02:49.280

    each of the plants that are in my canvas.

    00:02:50.040 --> 00:02:54.880

    I wanna say that you don't have to have everything figured out because

    00:02:55.760 --> 00:03:00.160

    I had never drawn this particular type of plant before and

    00:03:00.820 --> 00:03:03.000

    you can figure things out as you go.

    00:03:03.350 --> 00:03:07.160

    That is what is really fun about creating artwork is that

    00:03:07.950 --> 00:03:11.880

    there's no like defined, like right or wrong here,

    00:03:11.910 --> 00:03:16.640

    that it's fun to just figure things out and try

    00:03:16.640 --> 00:03:18.760

    different things as you are creating your artwork.

    00:03:19.110 --> 00:03:23.760

    Something that has really helped me is to just think about what are the

    00:03:23.760 --> 00:03:28.480

    different shapes that could give the look that you're looking to create.

    00:03:29.100 --> 00:03:33.840

    So for this particular plant, I knew I wanted the fuzzy kind of effect.

    00:03:34.100 --> 00:03:37.440

    So if I kind of made it look a little bit like fur,

    00:03:38.710 --> 00:03:41.680

    even though it's not, probably not furry though, I don't know.

    00:03:41.710 --> 00:03:44.320

    I've never actually held one of these plants before,

    00:03:44.940 --> 00:03:49.600

    but having that in mind as you are drawing it really

    00:03:49.670 --> 00:03:50.503

    does help.

    00:03:50.940 --> 00:03:55.440

    I'm getting close to finishing this plant so you can see that where I start

    00:03:55.460 --> 00:03:59.920

    adding in some highlights to the top edge of

    00:04:00.380 --> 00:04:05.280

    the fuzz at the bottom of the plant to add some more interest to

    00:04:05.780 --> 00:04:07.640

    the fuzzy, fuzzy look.

    00:04:08.110 --> 00:04:11.240

    Some projects are simple and don't require a lot of detail,

    00:04:11.500 --> 00:04:16.080

    but sometimes you work on something that each illustration is a piece of a

    00:04:16.080 --> 00:04:17.760

    larger story you are telling.

    00:04:18.190 --> 00:04:20.920

    This is the finished pattern design for the project.

    00:04:21.370 --> 00:04:23.920

    There are a lot of elements and detail in this one,

    00:04:24.020 --> 00:04:25.640

    and it was so much fun to create.

    00:04:26.220 --> 00:04:29.560
